Blue River is 3,367 acres of Postoak and Blackjack timber and beautiful waters broken by the occasional waterfall. Located just 8 miles northeast of Tishomingo in Southeast Oklahoma, this area offers spectacular views, great hiking, picnicking and wildlife watching.
Well -known for its winter trout fishing, opportunities to make a great catch abound at Blue River. From November 1st through March 31st, the river is stocked with rainbows about every week. This area is managed by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, so make sure you have an updated fishing or hunting license, or a conservation pass for day/weekend use. Purchase passes and licenses at the Chickasaw Information Center, Main Street in Tishomingo. Fishing license can also be bought at Scotty’s Blue River One Stop
A couple of not-to-be-missed events for trout fishermen are the trout derbies. Held on President’s Day weekend and Veteran’s Day weekend, these are well-attended tournaments. Registration information can be found at Scotty’s Blue River One Stop’s Facebook page or by calling 580-371-9288.
In addition to great fishing and hunting that Blue River provides, this is a beautiful location to just get out in nature. Huge granite outcroppings are an unusual site for most visitors and are magnificent upon close inspection. Grab a picnic lunch and plan to make a day of hiking, exploring and relaxing.
All camping is primitive and is allowed only in designated areas. There are two entrances to Blue River -South entrance - 4 miles east of Tishomingo on State Hwy 78, 6½ miles north on Bullard Chapel Road or North entrance – 9 miles north of Tishomingo on U.S. Hwy 377, 1 mile east on State Hwy 7.
